In history, dogs have played quite a part.... here are some historical dogs:

  • The first dog in space I 1957 was a Russian dog named Laika.

  • The two beagles that were owned by President Johnson were named Him and Her.

  • Sport was the name of Davy Crockett’s dog.

  • Marie Antoinette’s dog was a spaniel named Thisbe.

  • The Bible mentions dog 14 times.

  • Ancient Egyptians bred greyhounds.

  • Collies were previously called Scottish Sheep dogs until they changed in the 1800s.

  • George Washington had 36 foxhounds and one of them was named Sweetlips.

  • Roman soldiers were accompanied by mastiffs who also wore light armors.

  • The dog of Theodore Roosevelt, Pete, tore off a French ambassador’s trousers while on a visit to White House.

  • Pekingese, Newfoundland, and Pomeranian were the three breed of dogs that survived the Titanic.

  • The first canine Hollywood star was Rin Tin Tin.

  • Toto from the Wizard of Oz was a Carin Terrier, female, and named Terry.

  • All of the dogs that played Lassie were male.

  • Gidget is Taco Bell dog's name.

  • Bingo is the name of the dog of Cracker Jack.

There are also phrases, lines from poems, figurative languages that contain dogs:

  • The poem by Jonathan Swift "A Description of a City Shower," published in 1710, mentioned puppies that were drowned and dead cats being washed through the streets during heavy rainfall.

  • The phrase "dog days" or "dog days of summer" came from the belief that the hot summer days were caused by Sirius, the Dog Star, whose brightness is second to the sun. The ancient Romans offered sacrifices to the star to stop Sirius from being angry, so the humidity and heat would lessen. The Roman term was caniculares dies; it means "days of the dogs." Helical rising is coined to describe the rise of the Dog Star. The name Dog Star came from the Egyptians naming it after the god Osirus.

  • The City Wit or The Woman Wears the Breeches in 1653 by Richard Browne has this line in his comedy: "It shall raine... Dogs and Polecats".

  • Other dog phrases: that dog won't hunt, it's a dog eat dog world, top dog, and every dog has its day.

Physical Attributes of Dogs:

  • Puppy’s eyes open completely 12 days after birth.

  • The canine’s sense of smell is 100,000 times more potent than a human.

  • Dogs have twice more ears muscles for movement as compared to humans.

  • A year old dog and a person 15 years old are equal with respect to physical maturity.

  • Normal body temperature of dog is 101.2 degrees Farenheit.
