Basic Dog
Training
There are four basic commands that you must know in basic dog training. The four critical dog obedience
behaviours taught by professional dog trainers in basic dog training are sit, down, stay and come. They are all
essential if you want to have a well-behaved dog.
These four commands are the behaviours that every dog must be trained to do in basic dog training. To make your
dog behave and be a loving family companion, you must train your dog in the basics at first. If you start with the
basics you will be teaching your dog to get use to listening to your commands and also you will be
getting the dog ready for the next level in training.
Why is Basic Dog Training a Must?
Basic dog training will build your bond with your pet dog. You must also establish with your dog that you are
the alpha dog. Take note that dogs are pack animals, their social structure is similar to wolves who also have a
hiarachy. If you do not do basic dog training, then your dog will think that he is the alpha and be stubborn
because in his mind, you should be the one following him since he is the alpha. With the help of basic dog
training, your dog will not be confused of his standing in the household.
With basic dog training, your dog will be pleased to know that he has a good alpha showing the way. If you are
not sure how to do this, just think of the alpha as being a good parent. A good parent will always keep you safe, take care
of you and love you. But you must also know that as a mother, you must be fair and discipline those you care
about. Keep this in mind during basic dog training and you will be happy to see the results.
When you do basic dog training, you will experience fewer behavioural problems with your dogs especially when
you treat them well and show them the love. Training will decrease the incidence of problems such as chewing,
barking and destructiveness.
These are the four commands that you must train your
dog to do:
-
Sit – when you
give this command, the dog must drop his hinds to the ground and then remain propped upright by the use of
his front legs. It is expected that the dog will remain in this position until you tell him otherwise.
However, if you are going to walk away from the dog, you must give the stay command that will be discussed
below. Your dog must not sink into the down position when you give the sit command. If you give the stay
command then your pet must not slide while in this position.
-
Down – by giving this command, you pet is expected to drop down to his or her belly with
the hinds tucked beneath him or her and the front legs stretched out. Just like the sit command, your pet
is to stay there until told otherwise. It is important that when you give this command, your dog will not
roll on her side or flip onto her back.
-
Stay – this command is given after the sit or down command, you are
telling your dog to stay where he is and not move so that when you get back, your pet dog is still
there.
-
Come – with this command, your dog is
expected to come to you as quickly as possible and he or she is not to be allowed to stop or sniff.
When he or she is close to you, it is automatic that he or she will sit and remain there until
released.
