Dog Leash
Training
Ever experienced whenever you hold a leash in your hand, your dog goes berserk and out of
control? And when you attached the leash, he does a mad dash for the door eager to get out for a sprint around the
block? Every time you decide to go for a nice stroll, it always ends up with you being dragged around by your
overly eager dog? Well, it’s not too late to start your dog on some dog leash training. Dog leash training is
the answer to having a well spent, leisure walk with your pets. Dog leash training is designed to establish a
good relationship with your dog especially when there`s a lot of distracting factors on the street. Dog leash
training starts from training your dog to behave when he sees the leash on your hand and ends with a nice
leisurely walk around the neighborhood. With dog leash training, there won’t be an owner being dragged around
the block. Dog leash training also prevents accidents from happening, especially when you are on a busy
sidewalk with a lot of traffic both from cars and other people. With dog leash training, dogs are well behaved
and will not be able to pounce on other people, dogs or cars for that matter. So, it is important to learn
some of the basic dog leash training tips for a safe and leisure walk with your pets.
Starting the Dog Leash Training
For starters, be patient and consistent with your dog. They learn at a d ifferent pace and require consistent procedures for a behavior to be learned.
The initial step for dog leash training is enlisting the help of the entire household members who walk the
dog. Agree amongst yourselves on the usual commands used in the process and the techniques on how to handle
unwanted behaviors.
The next step on dog leash training would be to make the dog get used to the collar that he/she
is wearing. While the dog is feeding off his meal, attach his collar. This will make him associate the collar with
something pleasant like the food that he eats. Being enthusiastic animals, dogs are highly excited with the
prospect of a walk outside. The next thing to do would be to make him sit and wait. If he knows this already, make
him sit while you attach the leash on his collar. This will teach him to wait patiently. Praise him every time he
does it correctly or reward him with a treat.
After which, the next step on dog leash training would be to follow your dog while walking
around the house, making him more comfortable when you walk with him.
When he is used to the idea of walking with you, it is now time to go to the yard to practice
walking with him on a leash. If he bounds for the door, then we’re not yet done. Stay put and wait for him to calm
down before walking towards the door. If he wins by dragging you towards the door, this will only make him think
that you are rewarding him for tugging you along. You are the master and thus you make all the initial steps.
Once he behaves himself in the yard, it is now time to test his behavior outdoors. If he still
tugs on the leash, go back to the yard and do more practicing. It is important that he listens to your cues before
setting out again for the outdoors. If all else goes well, then enjoy your walk with your pet.
