Golden Retriever Training
Golden Retriever training is not so hard as long as you have the patience and the
consistency that is needed in order to train you pet well. Here are some things that might help you during your
Golden Retriever training:
-
In Golden Retriever training,
the first basic commands that you must teach your dog is to sit, stay, lie, and heel. When you say "sit" in
Golden Retriever training, your Goldie will sit down in place. This is actually common sense. When you say
"stay," your Goldie will stay on the spot even if you walk away. Commanding "lie" in Golden Retriever
training will make your Goldie lie on the floor and with the "heel" command, your dog will follow you as
you walk.
-
You must have
patience during Golden Retriever training. Golden Retrievers are one of the most intelligent breeds of dog
in the whole world so do not get frustrated when he or she does not get it right away during the first
Golden Retriever training session.
-
When you are doing Golden Retriever training, make sure that you bring along tasty
treats. However, you must only use these treats during Golden Retriever training and not when you feel like
giving it to your dog.
-
Start with the sit command in Golden Retriever training. Let your
dog stand in front of you and hold the treat firmly with your hand and move it towards the shoulder.
The eyes of your dog will follow and he will eventually sit. When he does that, praise and reward him
with a treat.
-
Repeat this process during your Golden Retriever
training but this time, use the word "sit." After that, your dog will then associate the treat when
he sits down.
-
Next command in your Golden Retriever
training is lying. When your Golden Retriever is able to sit, you can now teach him to lie down. Have
your dog sit in front of you. Hold the treat firmly and then move it towards the floor. When your dog
starts to go down, move the treat towards you at ground level. When he is already lying down, praise
and reward him with a treat.
-
Do the same thing
again but this time introduce the command. As your dog gets the hang of it, you can now make him go
from lying to standing.
-
The
next is the heel command. Walking to heel with your dog is easy. Just have your Golden Retriever on a
short leash on your left, have a treat in your right hand at about the level with your lower ribs in
the center of your body.
-
Make sure the dog knows about the treat. Walk away as you give the heel command.
Have his attention on you and do not hesitate to repeat the command over and over. Stop and praise
your pet after every few
yards.
-
As you improve on this, you can increase the length of the leash
until it is long enough and loose. In order to keep the attention of your dog, use other commands
like stop, sit or
lie.
-
Finish the training with your Golden Retriever using
the stay
command.
-
It is possible that at first, you
have to tie up your dog. What you must do is to let him sit or lie in position and tell him to stay.
Take two steps away from him but continue to face him. After a few seconds, return and then praise.
However, do not expect your dog to remain still at
first.
-
Practice with the stay
command since it is the one command that needs a lot of practice. Soon enough, you will be able to
untie him and turn away.
-
You can
add more commands later
on.
