Now that you have identified the cause of the excessive licking, you are ready to stop dog licking. You are now ready to take steps to stop it. Let us take the case of separation anxiety of your dog. If you think that the cause of excessive licking is separation anxiety, that is, licking starts when you leave the house, you can correct this behaviour easily.

When you leave the house, just leave. Do not make so much of a fuss about it. Do not say good bye or do not announce that you are leaving. Just leave and then come back just like nothing happened after about five minutes. Repeat it and this time extend it for about 10 minutes, go on like this and increase the time interval each time until you reach an an hour. Soon enough, you will see that you are able to leave the house and return later without the excessive licking of your dog.

Another simple thing that you can do to minimize or stop dog licking is to divert the attention of your dog. When your dog is starting to lick his paws, your face, the floor or just about anything else, catch his attention and divert his attention to other things other than licking. You can throw a ball, play fetch and you will soon notice that your dog forgets about licking because he is having so much fun playing ball.
